			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The four major methods of measuring body fat include the Navy Method, Home Body Fat Scales, Skinfold Calipers and Hydrostatic Weighing. For this article however; we will concentrate on the three most commonly used.</p>
<p>The first technique is the Home Body Fat Scale. A very small electrical charge is passed through the body, and a resistance measurement is taken. When you compare the results to your actual body weight, your body fat can be determined.</p>
<p>This is probably the most error prone test. There are several factors that can affect the test results. There are already small electrical currents in the body that are produced by the heart and the skeletal muscle. Water in the body and skin temperature can also affect the test. You should avoid exercise at least 12 hours before your test and also fast at least 4 hours before. This will insure the most accurate test results.</p>
<p>The most commonly used method for determining body fat is the Skin Fold Caliper test. It is possible to do this yourself if you have an easy to use caliper and follow the direction closely. The Accumeasuer Caliper is probably the best choice if you do it yourself. It is highly recommended that you have this test done by a professional to get accurate results. A set of body fat calipers is used to take several measurements on different body parts. When these measurements are plugged into a formula your body fat can be determined.</p>
<p>One of the most accurate ways to measure your body fat is Hydrostatic Weighing. This method of measuring body fat is based on the Archimedes principle. If you studied physics in school you will know exactly what I am talking about. If you didn&#8217;t, you will better understand after I go through the process. First of all, you need to round up a hydrostatic weighing tank and someone who knows what they are doing. The examiner will calculate your body density by measuring the water that is displaced while you are immersed in the tank. The amount of water that is displaced is proportional to your body weight. Your body fat is then calculated with a formula based on your body density. Most people find this to be an extreme way to measure body fat, but it remains the most accurate.</p>
<p>Does it really matter if you keep track of your body fat? Most people would say its way too much trouble. With all the different exercise programs and diets out there; knowing what your body fat is can help determine what program you should choose. It should be a vital part of your weight loss plan. Fat loss is just as important as limiting calories and losing pounds. If you want to track your diet or exercise plan progress, then body fat measurement is the most objective way to do this. When trying to lose weight, always remember to set realistic goals and don&#8217;t give up!</p>

<p>Particular foods to buy:</p>
<p>Find out if there are alternatives to the food you normally buy by checking the labels and choosing low saturated fat ones.</p>
<p>If you are buying poultry such as chicken or turkey, buy it without the skin on.</p>
<p>Fish or vegetarian versions of meals will have a lower fat content.</p>
<p>Choose low fat alternatives of dairy products like semi-skimmed milk and low fat yoghurts.</p>
<p>If you are buying a pie, buy one with only one crust at the top.</p>
<p>Checking the cut of meat and the visible fat content will help reduce the fat level. Look out for lower fat alternatives of meat such as lean mince meat. Also check the amount of fat on a cut of meat and choose the one with the lowest fat amount.</p>
<p>Preparation in the Kitchen:</p>
<p>Unsaturated oil are a much healthier alternative to saturated oils. The most popular unsaturated oils are rapeseed, olive and sunflower oils. These are a good alternative to lard, butter and ghee.</p>
<p>Grill your meat as an alternative to frying it. Grilling encourages all the fat from the meat to run off and away. Removing the fat from the meat prior to cooking will lower the fat content.</p>
<p>Using a non-stick pan can allow you to avoid using fat or oil altogether.</p>
<p>When adding spreads to food such as mashed potato use a low fat spread.</p>
<p>If you are on a fitness program then healthier alternatives can be substituted. Adding all these small bits of advice together can amount to large differences in your diet which can significantly lower your fat intake. Just making small regular changes can soon add up to large improvements.</p>
