The Circulation

The circulatory system is an integrated network of vessels that supplies blood to complete body. The part of the network which delivers blood to all parts of the body except the lungs is known as the systemic circulation, while the flow of blood through the lungs is known as the pulmonary circulation.

The Systemic Circulation:

The Arteries and Capillaries

Blood which has been transferred into the lungs (bright red in color) is pumped out of the heart by the aorta, which is the body’s largest artery, which is approximately 1 inch in diameter. The coronary arteries, which provide blood to the heart, branch out from the aorta just above the aortic valve. The aorta arches upward from the left ventricle to the upper chest and then runs down the chest into the abdomen. It makes the important trunk for the arterial part of the circulation, this branch off into various arteries that transfer oxygen-rich blood to various tissues.

The arteries are further categorized into smaller tubes, called arterioles, which in turn branch off into even more smaller vessels, called capillaries. While the walls of larger and medium-sized blood vessels are made of a layer of connective tissues and muscles cells with a very thin inner layer known as the endothelium, the walls of the capillaries consist of endothelium all alone. Most of the capillary walls are only one cell thick and small intestinal stormily tumors of a single red blood cell at a particular time. It is in the capillaries that which exchange of substances between the blood and the tissues takes place. Through the walls of the capillaries, the blood transmits its oxygen and nutrients and collects carbon dioxide and waste products of the body.

A large part of the waste products is given off from blood as it flows through the kidneys, where the plasma (the fluid component of blood) pass slowly through the capillary walls of the kidneys eliminating mechanism. Most of the fluid is absorbed again into the bloodstream; a fraction of a percent, along with the waste products, is removed from the body in form of urine, which gathers at a rate of about a quart a day in a healthy human being. The blood pressure on the arterial side of the circulatory system is relatively high, but it decreases as the arteries branch off into arterioles and capillaries. On the venous side, the blood pressure is relatively low in comparison to the blood pressure on the arterial side. The difference in both the pressures contributes to the driving force that propels the blood through the circulatory system. The Veins the capillaries carrying blood that now has lower oxygen content integrate to form the venules, which in turn converge into successively larger veins. Venous blood, which is sometimes referred to as blue, is in fact a purplish or dark red color. Venous blood enters the right atrium through the two major vessels: one is the superior vena cava, which carries blood from the upper part of the body, including the brain; and the second is inferior vena cava, which carries blood from the lower part, since the pressure in the veins is normally lower than in the arteries.
